cable broken?

Question: Hey, I have a fairly specific problem, i hope some of you reading this will be able to give me some advice. I have very old, positively ancient laptop, Compaq Armada. Its battery charger, more like its cable is broken. It has connection problems. And since the battery is an old one, i can hardly use the laptop wihtout constantly being connected to the plug. So i took the cable to a general computer service, what they told me was that they can mend that little part of the cable that is broken, (that 5 cm nearest the laptop plug) for a relatively spicy price. My real quesion is what other option do i have? I mean, don't more or less all Compaq laptops have compatible charger-cables? (Something like with Nokia mobile phones) Can't i buy a new one instead, even if the type of my laptop is that out-of-date? And last but not least, if i do have the cable mended, wouldn't it be necessary to look through all the length of the cable? Thank you for _any_ help!
