Power problems with my cheap Compaq Presario C300 laptop.?

Question: I thought that I originally had a bad AC adapter because the battery died and when I tried to hook up the AC Adapter the power light would illuminate momentarily and then come to a startup screen and then the laptop would die again. Well after checking the inputs to/from the AC adapter and finding the 120 VAC going into the adapter and 19VDC going into the laptop, I am at a loss. Is there some overvoltage/current circuit that might cause this to happen? I unplugged the adapter from the Laptop and I get nothing. I am guess this is because the battery is indeed dead but when I try charging it for an hour it still either doesn't charge and the laptop still wont work with the adapter. If someone could give me some tips/advice I would appreciate it. I just hope it's not the motherboard or anything. This thing is cheap and I would get another one before paying a tech more than what this is worth.

Answer: remove the AC adapter again, also from the wall. remove the battery. connect the AC adapter, first the plug on the laptop then on the wall. start the laptop - does it work? if not, the battery likely killed the internal power module. it could also be that there is an overcurrent switch at the bottom of the laptop. if there is one push it back in.
